Prince William Sound...God's Country
The God of Rain

Prince William Sound is located in South Central Alaska. It's protected
waters and
beautiful scenery make it ideal for small pleasure craft. Capt Cook was
the first
European to sail into these waters. He named it Sandwich Sound however
the cartographers
liked the name Prince William Sound better. He also named several of
the islands.

I often take my 13ft inflatable into PWS to camp, photograph, explore,
and fish.
It's always great to get away from the city and enjoy the wilderness
of Alaska.

Here we rented a forest service cabin. The tide is out beaching my
boat.

My sister and I enjoying the view after unpacking the boat.

There are a few seals around, but not many.

Be forwarded before coming to PWS. It rains almost every day. 180-230
inches of percipitation
per year. It's the the wettest place in North America. I once spent
four days camping in a
tent. I think it stopped raining for a total of three hours. My four
season tent leaked
after the third day and my sleeping bag got wet. Gortex isn't
waterproof, wear plastic.

Getting wet wood to ignite can be a challenge. Dress warm because you
can't always rely
on the wood stove working properly. This one filled the cabin with
smoke due to
a rusted out stove pipe.

PWS gets lots of snow. This photo was taken the first week of June.

The snow is gone by July. Taken from Culross Island. You can see Knight
Island in the
background. When the sun comes out it can be truely wonderful.

The ground is spongy from all the water. PWS has a few blacktail deer
and lots of black bears.

Here is the Columbia Glacier, about five miles away.

There are lots of waterfalls which make great photographs.
